Siamo in Inghilterra, nel 1891. Il giovane attore teatrale Lawrence Talbot (Benicio Del Toro) torna dagli Stati Uniti al suo paese natale, nella brughiera di Blackmoor. Era andato via molti anni prima dopo esser stato ricoverato in una clinica psichiatrica dal padre, il nobile sir John Talbot (Anthony Hopkins), in seguito alla morte della madre.
