Benjamin Mee (Matt Damon), per cercare di ricompattare la propria giovane famiglia dopo la morte della moglie, usa i risparmi di una vita per acquistare un disastrato parco zoologico nella campagna inglese. Insieme ai figli, prima della grande riapertura dovrà sistemare la fatiscente struttura, che ospita più di duecento esemplari di animali esotici e in via d’estinzione. Lo aiuteranno nell’impresa un’equipe di poche persone, che conta anche sulla presenza di Kelly Foster (Scarlett Johansson), che vive nella proprietà insieme alla ribelle cugina tredicenne Lily (Elle Fanning).
