Michael è un adolescente triste con una situazione familiare complessa: sua madre è morta e suo padre è sempre assente per lavoro. Il ragazzi vive così sempre tra computer, giochi di ruolo e film dell'orrore. Un giorno scopre un nuovo passatempo: Brainscan, una realtà virtuale che presenta una serie interminabile di scene raccapriccianti e che rischia di trasformare Michael in un serial killer. Il detective Hayden riesce però a entrare in contatto con il ragazzo.
