Gary Webb (Jeremy Renner) lavora come giornalista al San Jose Mercury News, sacrificando la propria vita privata per la professione. Negli anni Novanta del Novecento, Webb scopre il ruolo esercitato dalla Cia nell'importazione della cocaina in California, venduta per raccogliere soldi da destinare all'esercito ribelle dei Contras in Nicaragua. Sostenuto da moglie e figli, Webb porta alla luce la vicenda ma diviene presto oggetto di una campagna diffamatoria della Cia e dei giornalisti rivali, ritrovandosi a combattere con tutte le sue forze per salvare reputazione e famiglia.
