R.E.M. ha segnato il punto in cui il post-punk si è trasformato in rock alternativo. Quando il loro primo singolo, "Radio Free Europe", fu pubblicato nel 1981, scatenò un movimento nel garage sotterraneo americano. Mentre c'erano un certo numero di band hardcore e punk negli Stati Uniti durante i primi anni '80, R.E.M. riportò la chitarra pop nel lessico sotterraneo. Combinazione di ganci per chitarra che suonano con testi borbottati e criptici e un D.I.Y. estetica presa in prestito dal post-punk, la band suonava contemporaneamente tradizionale e moderna. Sebbene non ci fossero innovazioni evidenti nella loro musica, R.E.M. aveva un'identità e un senso dello scopo che trasformarono il sottosuolo americano.
