In un paesino vicino a Tokyo, negli anni '50, si trasferiscono la giovane Satsuke e la piccola Mei, insieme al padre, mentre la madre è ricoverata in un ospedale non troppo distante. Le due dimostrano uno straordinario entusiasmo per il mondo della campagna e per il folclore popolare, una purezza che le porta a conoscere le creature del bosco dove si erge maestoso un albero sacro. Oltre allo spirito guardiano, Totoro, grande, paffuto e peloso, incontreranno altri “totori” più piccoli, i minuscoli “nerini” (simili agli spiriti della fuliggine della Città incantata) e l’imponente e veloce Gattobus.
