Quali erano i Beatles agli anni '60, i Led Zeppelin erano agli anni '70: una band così riuscita e innovativa che finirono per creare il prisma attraverso il quale fu vista la loro intera epoca. Gli Zeppelin hanno inaugurato l'era dell'album rock - si sono rifiutati di pubblicare singoli dai loro album, anche quando stavano raccogliendo enormi spettacoli radiofonici - e dell'arena rock, suonando stadi sempre più grandi mentre le loro vendite di biglietti salivano alle stelle. Altre band suonavano in un campo simile ma i Led Zeppelin portavano una mistica unica coltivata dalla criptica copertina dell'album, dalla distanza dalla stampa e, ovviamente, dalla loro musica. Attingendo al blues elettrico del dopoguerra, al primo rock & roll e alla psichedelia, Zeppelin ha creato un ruggito titanico nei loro primi giorni, ma anche allora non erano semplicemente pesanti. Sotto il wattaggio, c'era una forte corrente sotterranea di folk-rock e il quartetto avrebbe presto inserito musica mondiale, funk, country e sintetizzatori, creando un corpo avventuroso di lavoro che aveva un'influenza lunga e duratura su hard rock, heavy metal, e rock alternativo.
